Maundy Thursday Service
7.00 PM Service, 17 April
From the hoped-for entry into Jerusalem celebrated at Palm Sunday, followed by Jesus arrest, trial and death during Holy Week, to the discovery of his resurrection by his friends on Easter Sunday, Holy Week is a special time for the Christian church and everyone who wants to understand the life and mission of Jesus Christ.
On the Thursday evening before Good Friday, we will observe Maundy Thursday with an evening service at 7.00pm.
This commemorates the Last Supper, Jesus’s last meal with his disciples when he washed his disciples’ feet before they ate, which was traditional at the time. He also gave them a new commandment: “Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another” (John 13:34). The word Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning ‘command’.
Our Maundy Thursday service includes communion and the tradition of foot washing for people who would like to take part.
What is the meaning of the Last Supper?
“Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.’” –Luke 22:19-20
As Christians, we are invited to share a meal of faith – as communion or eucharist – and to follow Jesus’ command to love and forgive each other.
