Cathedral Facing Future Options
Thursday 2 November 2023
The Waiapu Cathedral parish in Napier is considering its options following a detailed seismic assessment showing the 60-year old cathedral needs strengthening. Napier City Council has also listed the building as a Heritage 1 category in its draft district plan which is open to submission until 15 December.
The parish has met to consider the options and the seismic assessment information. An estimate of $20M of work will be needed to bring the building up to current earthquake codes. However the engineering assessment is that this is a strong building which should be safe in moderate quakes.
Hawke’s Bay Today has featured an interview with Dean Di Woods (31 October) which outlines the issues facing the cathedral parish and the city.
More information on the seismic assessment is here.
