Jazzing Up Sunday, Winter Art Deco Weekend Service
19 July, 10 – 11am, all welcome
Each year the Cathedral is associated with the splendid Art Deco Weekends by providing a themed service. 1930’s winter outfits are encouraged – coats, scarves and fur stoles for coziness – and we particularly like seeing the hats on display.
Our morning service features a jazz mass written by local composer Bill Bennett especially for the Cathedral choir for these festivals.
Enjoy traditional hymns of the time accompanied by the superb Cathedral organ to boost the congregation’s voices, and the a jazz spiritual anthem from the choir.
Enjoy this more upbeat, relaxed service, and join us for morning tea afterwards.
All welcome.
If you prefer – the 8am Eucharist service is a quieter service with no music, but you can still dress up!
Our Art Deco Connection
The current Cathedral was built in 1950s/1960s after the previous Cathedral collapsed and burned in the 1931 Hawke’s Bay Earthquake. The previous Cathedral was a classic brick construction which did not withstand the shaking. A service is held every Tuesday morning in the Cathedral in memory of the earthquake and the loss of life, including the parishioner who died in the rubble.
