Stations of the Cross

Fridays 20 February – 27 March @ 12.15pm

A traditional prayer walk during Lent, the period before Good Friday.

On Fridays during Lent, pilgrims in Jerusalem can walk the ancient Via Dolorosa, the path that Jesus walked to Calvary, carrying his cross. They pause to pray and reflect at 14 sites along the way.

This tradition path of prayer and reflection can be followed in our cathedral, using the 14 paintings displayed on the pillars in the nave which depicts the events in Christ’s walk along the Via Dolorosa.  The paintings mark the Stations of the Cross, an ancient way of telling the story of significant moments in Jesus’ death during the weeks of Lent. Nine of the stations come from the Gospels; five come from medieval European imagination.  The paintings in the Cathedral are by renown Napier artist and parishioner Phyllis Simmonds (1932 – 2000).  Read more …

The guided prayer walk is held at 12.15pm on Fridays between 20 February and 27 March.
