Remembrance Day Service at Rissington
9 November 2022
Dean Di Woods officiated at the Remembrance Day ceremony which featured the blessing of two giant wooden carvings of soldiers.
Dean Di Woods led the Remembrance Day (or Armistice Day) service on a very wet Friday 11 November at Rissington. The community gathered in good numbers despite the increasingly wet weather.
Wreaths were laid at the Rissington soldiers’ memorial by Hastings Mayor Hazelhurst and local councillor, Tania Kerr, by military personnel and by local people. Also present was a representative of the Veteran’s Affairs Office.
A key focus was the blessing of the impressive redwood sculpture of two soldiers on the corner of Soldier’s Settlement Road. The sculpture initiative was lead by local women, Bronwyn Farquhar and Ruth Dawson. It was created by Chris Elliot (in photo talking to woman in tan jacket) and the late master carver Hugh Tareha who was formally acknowledged. Dean Di Woods blessed the carving and placed a floral tribute at the base of the sculpture.
This massive art work is really worth the short drive into the country to see it.
