We celebrate the start of the church year and the Christmas season with our special Advent services.

We welcome everyone into the Cathedral over the next few weeks to reflect on the meaning of Christmas and, with your family and children, enjoy and celebrate the traditions of the season.  

Sunday 3 December
10am – Sunday morning Eucharist service.  We light the first Advent candle.

7pm – Advent service – Join with us in this stunning service where beautiful Advent carols look to the light that Jesus Christ brings to the world.  Who could you bring to this special evening service?

Sunday 17 December
10am – Sunday morning Eucharist service.

7pm – Nine Lessons & Carols. This is a very special Waiapu Cathedral tradition with our superb choir and organ.  Hear the story of the promise of the Messiah and the birth of Jesus in nine short readings (lessons) interspersed with carols and anthems from the choir, and join in singing some well-known carols. This service first began on Christmas Eve 1918 when Kings College, Cambridge in England started the tradition after World War I; this very special service has been broadcasted by the BBC at Christmas since 1928.
